IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Repair & Replacement

Qualification duration: 1 day (forms day 3 of a combined 3-day Level 2.2 / Level 3 electric vehicle qualification training course programme with AK Automotive)
The IMI Level 3 Award in Electric / Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement enables learners to demonstrate, in a practical way, their knowledge of electric and hybrid vehicle technology and repair procedures when working on non-live high energy electrical components and associated systems.
Specifically this involves the safe removal, inspection, testing of serviceability, refitting and reinstatement of high voltage components using manufacturer-specific repair procedures and technical information.
This qualification follows on from the IMI Level 2.2 Award in Electric / Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities. It builds upon the knowledge and skills covered in the Level 2.2 award.
Candidates must first have successfully completed the Level 2.2 award to be eligible to progress to do the Level 3 unit.
The Level 3 award covers the following main content:
Procedures
i) Observation of health and safety and correct use of PPE and safety equipment
ii) Correct use of tools and equipment
iii) Following manufacturer-specific repair procedures and information
iv) Making the vehicle safe prior to carrying out repairs
v) High energy component removal and replacement
Knowledge requirements
i) Disconnection of high energy supplies correctly
ii) Disconnection of high energy components correctly
iii) Disconnection of low energy components correctly
Testing
i) On-vehicle testing of systems (e.g. checking fault codes, voltage checks)
ii) Use of specialist test instruments and equipment
iii) Reinstatement and resetting / testing of vehicle systems post-repair
iv) Referral to technical data, repair instructions and wiring diagrams
Records and recommendations
i) Completing accurately records of work carried out in the correct format (e.g. job cards)
ii) Making recommendations based upon the findings of tests and replacement procedures
carried out
Practical sessions
i) Making the vehicle safe
ii) Remove and reinstate high voltage components
iii) Perform testing of high voltage components
iv) Test suitability of replacement high voltage component
Assessment and feedback
Candidates will be assessed through observation of them performing practical tasks by the course instructor. Each candidate must successfully perform the following practical tasks:
i) Isolate, carry out safety checks and disconnect a high energy battery system
ii) Remove and test the serviceability of a high energy system component
iii) Refit the component, carry out safety checks and reset the vehicle post repair
iv) Accurately complete records of work carried out
Candidates must meet all assessment criteria to successfully complete and pass the practical tasks to achieve the Level 3 award.
Candidates will each receive verbal and written feedback from the course assessor and have the opportunity to give feedback.
Certification
Upon a candidate’s successful completion of the course and having passed all assessments and met all assessment criteria, a claim will be submitted to the Institute of the Motor Industry for their IMI Level 3 Award in Electric / Hybrid Vehicle Systems Repair and Replacement certificate.
Pre requisites
To be accepted for a place on the IMI Level 3 electric and hybrid vehicle qualification course, candidates must first have achieved the Level 2.2 Award in Electric / Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities.
